Breed history

The harsh region shaped these horses. Constant bloody conflicts, hard work, miserable treatment, harsh winters, droughts, summer heat. Only the best and most resilient survived. The Karachay horse is the most important mountain breed. Breeding took place for centuries in the climatic and geographical conditions of the North Caucasus. In 1943, the Karachay nation was displaced by Stalin to Central Asia for alleged collaboration with the Germans, and the Karachay breed was renamed the Kabardian and the breeds were combined. This situation lasted until 1983, when the breeds were divided again and both breeds are kept separately in the stud book. During their common history, 90 Karachay stallions and only three Kabardian stallions were used in breeding. This has resulted in the fact that currently the proportion of Karachay blood in Kabardian horses is more than 15%, and conversely, Kabardian blood is contained in the blood of Karachays by only less than 2%.
After the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, three soldiers traveled home more than 10 thousand kilometers on Karachay horses on hooves. In the most difficult conditions of the winter of 1935-1936, a 3000-kilometer endurance race was organized on the main ridge of the Caucasus. In the Klukhorsky mountain pass (2781 m. above sea level), the horses ran through deep snow. This 100-kilometer section was overcome in five hours and seven minutes (at night!).
In 1999, riders on two Karachay horses and one Anglo-Karachay horse conquered Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe at 5633 m. above sea level, (eastern peak), and the following year also the western peak – 5644 meters. This is an unprecedented feat for these horses in the mountains. A pair of geldings rode 50 kilometers in the mountains in a team with a total load of 2 tons in 6 hours and 4 minutes.
Nature

If you find your way to him, he will give you the blue from the sky. They are not afraid of anything, no obstacle is too big for them to overcome. They are very intelligent, but still modest, courageous, but sometimes they need support, which they seek from a person.
In short, they are very characterful horses.
Physique
They have a long head, partly with a snub nose, with mobile alert ears and well-developed tactile whiskers. They have a medium-long, well-muscled neck, relatively straight shoulders and a low withers. Their body is strong with a straight back, the limbs are also strong with generally good joints, bones and short, strong hocks; the hind legs sometimes tend to have a saber-like stance, which is typical of mountain breeds. They have strong and hard hooves, a long and thick mane and tail.
Breeding
The breeding of Karachay horses was aimed at breeding horses that were not only fast, but also hardy, obedient, easy to care for, and able to move year-round in diverse, even high-altitude terrain. All of these qualities were dictated by their use in the army, and especially in protecting state borders.
Rearing
We keep horses outdoors all year round, it is natural and best for them. Foals are born on pastures without human assistance. As soon as the mother allows, we start getting to know them, we want the foal to know from an early age that humans are friends.
Some of our horses remain not completely tamed, their wildness is rarely seen anywhere else. These are mainly original imported breeding mares.
Training
We start with basic training such as learning to use a halter, leading
and lifting legs very early. It can be said that as soon as the period of sufficient petting and showing that we are friends has passed. Then everything is much easier and the foal gets the best foundation for future training.
The next phase of training occurs at three years old, when everything takes place in complete peace and quiet, because our goal is balanced and calm horses.
We fully recommend that the horse be weighed only after the sixth year,
when the development of all parts of the horse’s body is complete.
Training
In the years 2005 – 2008 our horses started 63 times in endurance races with very good results. In the years 2009 – 2012 there was an extensive reconstruction of the area and stables, construction of training facilities, restoration of the pond and consolidation of the breeding herd, so there was no time for sports. Currently we are again training and preparing young horses honestly. With their characteristics, Karachay horses are also suitable for military, dressage, show jumping, etc. Their intelligence, speed and agility are not lost even in western disciplines.
